S£X AMONG THE ROMANS The Romans resented various customs of the neighboring civilizations with which they had merged: Etruscans, Sabines and Greeks. While Etruscans and Sabines respected women who were free to indulge, the Greeks feared a lot of the freedom of these, being, as a result of Doric domination, and then Hellenic, become patriarchal and rulers of women and children. the Romans therefore were a middle way, patriarchal but not entirely, until Octavian's intelligence freed them almost entirely, including sexuality. In Rome, free children circulated with a special amulet around their neck, the bulla, which signaled their social condition.
