Another tale of Crime and Punishment

Another tale of Crime and Punishment

In 1765 James Moody an Innkeeper in Smithhills , Paisley came before the Sheriff court.
At court Moody denied he owed a debt of £8 which he disputed saying it was £4 and alleging the bill had been obtained fraudulently when he was intoxicated.

Moody bribed several people to give false evidence for him. One was offered 10 shillings and another use of a horse but by doing so he committed subornation of witnesses.

Moody was tried at length and found guilty. He was sentenced to be taken to the Townhead and to receive on his naked back twenty five lashes by the common hangman , then at the head of New street 25 lashes more, then to Paisley Cross to receive 25 more.
He was then taken to the Tolbooth jail for a five month jail sentence. On his release he was banished from Renfrewshire never to return on penalty of have the same punishment carried out again.
