Punishments that were carried out by the Roman?

Have you heard about some of the common punishments that were carried out by the Roman?

When it comes to the slaves for example, it is no big surprise that Roman law provided different punishments for theem, however even despite the fact, that slaves had absolutely minimum or zero laws, they were still considered to be a merchandise that cost money and produced more wealth, therefore punishments were not aimed to inflict on them lasting damage should the transgression was minor.

 One of the most common punishments a method, where slave had a certain weight tied to his feet so he might not move until the weight was put away. Another possibility was branding slaves on the forehead or carrying out a punishment called furca, where the slaver´s neck was put into a wooden piece that he must have carried for the rest of the given time. When a slave made a capital or major offense, he might be crucified, however this practice was eventually prohibited under the rule of the Emperor Constantine.

For Roman citizens, the punishments were different, and they included for instance damnum (paying a fine), vincula (bonds), verbera (whipping of various kinds) or even banishment or slavery itself. Roman citizen cannot supposedly be sentenced to death unless he was guilty of treason and even if he was founded guilty of this crime, he couldn´t be crucified. 

 As for the death punishments, the methods vary greatly. The most common method included: Percussio securi (beheading), Strangulatio (Strangling in prison), Dejectio e rupe Tarpeia (throwing a criminal from the Tarpeian rock), Projectio in profluentem (throwing a criminal into the river) or burying a person alive. 

A special punishment would be for instance for committing a patricide – if a person was found guilty, he was instantly blindfolded as unworthy of the light, then he was taken to the Fields of Mars where he was stripped naked and whipped with rods and afterwards he was sewed into a sack and thrown into the sea. Later in time, a serpent or even a dog or a cock was put into the sack as well.
