A shocking bodycam footage has captured a former NFL footballer being shot dead by police after he tried to point a gun at officers.

Ex NFL defensive lineman Ekom Udofia was reportedly standing in the middle of Interstate 17 in Phoenix, Arizona, US and trying o get hit by cars while pointing a gun at passersby on November 30, according to Fox10 Phoenix.

Officers were called to the scene upon receiving a 911 call suggesting Udofia appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

The caller said: "He's trying to jump on the car, and tries to... to hit the car with his body."

In the bodydam footage released by Phoenix Police, the 33-year-old is seen approaching officers while they shout repeatedly for him to drop his weapon, which is later identified as a BB gun, before they shoot him multiple times.

"Please drop the gun, dude! Please!" an officer can be heard on the video saying. "Drop the gun, man! Please! Please! Do not make me shoot you!"

Another officer pleads with Udofia: "Please! Please! Do not make me shoot you!"

Udofia falls to the ground but refuses to drop the gun. The officer then shoot rounds of stun bags when he tries to raise the gun and points at the police.

A police dog is also deployed to take him into custody. Udofia was later taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Udofia, who was from Scottsdale near Phoenix, Arizona, struggled with his mental health, according to court documents obtained by USA Today.

He had been arrested and placed on probation for disorderly conduct and indecent exposure but was successfully completing the requirements set in place for his probation.

The court document stated: "He does not view himself as a bad person and believes he needs more help with his mental health than jail time.

"His criminal history has all been mental health related and he is in a good place now."

Udofia played football for Stanford University between 2005 and 2009 before playing for the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints in the NFL.

An internal investigation by the Professional Standard Bureau is underway as well as a criminal investigation.
