The romance is dead: The couple were unable to have sex because of their enormous bulks - and Rena was forced to care for Lee, even applying anti-chaffing powder to his skin rolls

No way to live: Lee was essentially unable to leave his bed, except to visit the bathroom, where Rena had to wash his entire body

A morbidly obese couple who met at a weight loss clinic over a decade ago have become intimate for the first time after losing 574lbs (41 stone) between them.

Lee Sutton, 42, and Rena Kiser, 39, from Missouri, who weighed 714lbs (51 stone) and 542lbs (39 stone), respectively, had gastric bypass surgery in the hopes of having a 'normal' relationship after their weight skyrocketed to the combined total of 1,256lbs (almost 90 stone).  

But after managing to almost half their combined body weight in the 12 months since they both underwent gastric surgery, they were finally able to have sex for the first time since meeting 11 years ago.

Tough times: Lee and Rena had barely been mobile before their weight loss surgery, and had to spend much of their time lying down and resting - but were not able to be intimate 

Their story is featured in the TLC reality series My 600lb Life, where Lee shared his delight at their new-found intimacy, saying: 'We never had intercourse before but we can now!' 

The couple, who first met when Rena and her older brother Michael decided to check into a weight loss clinic together, spent years using food to cope with their problems. 

But their mutual size got so out of control they were forced to rely on Lee's sister Cassie to come over and take care of them. 

As the cameras began capturing their weight loss journey, their weight had reached such a severe level that Lee was barely able leave his bed and relied on Rena to take care of him. 

However, her weight was rising so rapidly that she admitted she wouldn't be able to take care of him for long - and they were seen bringing in Lee's sister Cassie to help them with their day-to-day lives.

Terrifying: The couple's eating habits had become totally out of control, and they couldn't stop themselves from gorging on numerous plates of junk food every day

In a preview for the program Rene admitted that 'it's embarrassing' that she and Lee couldn't even take care of themselves anymore. 

'The only reason we are even able to survive right now is because Lee's sister comes over every day and helps us.' 

As their weight continued to spiral out of control, Rena and Lee made the decision to travel from Missouri to Texas to see weight loss surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaradan in hopes they both qualify for potentially life-saving gastric bypass surgery.

But it was only then that they realized just how severe their conditions were, with the doctor candidly telling them both that their lives were at serious risk - and that they would both likely not survive for many more years without shedding weight. 

They were each told to begin a strict eating plan in order to lose enough weight to qualify for gastric surgery, with Lee managing to shed the necessary pounds without too many problems.  

Anger: The couple began arguing over the fact that Lee returned to his unhealthy ways after surgery - with Rena even admitting at one point that he became violent with her

Rena, meanwhile, saw her weight loss journey suffer a serious setback when she was hospitalized for pneumonia, and was forced to wait as Lee went under the knife without her.  

Having undergone his gastric bypass, it seemed as though Lee was on the road to recovery - and to a healthy new lifestyle - however he found it near impossible to give up his previous eating habits, and quickly regressed to the junk food-heavy, high-calorie diet he had once followed.  

His lack of motivation pushed their relationship to the edge, with Rena admitting to the cameras that Lee began to get violent with her - as it was revealed he had only lost 9lbs in the weeks following his surgery.  

After Rena returned home the couple continued to argue over Lee's dangerous habits - and Dr Nowzaradan sent them to therapy in the hopes of getting them back on track, with Lee promising not to get violent in the future after Rena threatened to leave him.

Vowing to put her own health before that of her partner, Rena worked towards her own gastric bypass - and promised to work as hard as she could in order to continue losing weight after leaving hospital.   

Trouble: Over the past 11 years, their weight spiraled out of control and they could no longer take care of each other

It was after Rena's surgery that the penny finally dropped for the duo - who realized that they had lost enough combined weight to enable them to have sex for the first time in 11 years, taking their relationship to new heights. 

At the end of the 12 months, Lee had shed a total of 303lbs, dropping to 411lbs while Rena lost 271lbs, dropping to 278lbs - a combined weight loss of 574lbs. 

Lee even vowed to propose once the duo had reached their goal weights. 

The couple's relationship certainly didn't start in the most healthy of environments - with the duo first falling in love while receiving treatment at an in-patient weight loss clinic, where Rena had first gone with her brother.  

But from the start, the two were attracted to one another - and Lee even admitted he used to get 'kind of jealous' when they first met because Rena was always tending to her brother and making sure he had everything he needed when she came into their room. 

'I got to [the point] where I would follow her around. We were like Bonnie and Clyde,' he says. 

The next step: Throughout their weight loss journey, the couple faced many ups and downs - but ended their time on My 600lb Life vowing to continue their healthier lifestyle

Rena says that Lee was a 'sweet guy,' and they they started spending a lot of time together until the ultimately became an 'item at the clinic.' 

'That broke the rules there, so we either had to stop dating or leave,' she says, and Lee notes they would get in trouble for holding hands or showing any kind of affection to each other.  

'We decided we just wanted to be together. We wanted a relationship,' Lee says. 

Rena added: 'We loved each other, and we've stayed together over the past 11 years since leaving the clinic.'

However, they both continued to struggle with food and their health was only getting worse the longer they stayed together, supporting each other's bad habits. 

'Rena has done an excellent job of taking care of Lee, but within the last two to three years she has went downhill so much that I have to do it,' Lee's sister Cassie told the camera at one point.
