Execution of hostages in Pančevo.
Execution of hostages in Pančevo. On 21 and 22 April 1941, in Pančevo, because of their (alleged) involvement in the attack on German troops and the illegal possession of weapons, 18 people were shot – and 18 more were hanged, in retaliation for the same attack (that is, for one killed and one wounded German soldier), and also for (allegedly) acting hostile against ethnic Germans.
The court-martial that sentenced these 36 people (mainly Serbs) to death was formed at the request of the city commander, Lieutenant Colonel Fritz Bandelow (commander of the IV Battalion, Infantry Regiment "Großdeutschland"), and the presiding judge was SS-Sturmbannführer Rudolf Hoffmann of the SS Division "Reich".
The shooting was carried out by the members of the "Großdeutschland" Regiment and the hanging by the local Germans.
